New York School of Interior Design and Cooper-Hewitt Museum Select IceStone for Green Design Awards and Triennial

Brooklyn, NY – May 3, 2010 IceStone, the Brooklyn-based countertop company that makes durable surfaces from 100% recycled glass, in a concrete matrix free from toxins, petrochemicals and VOCs, was selected both in the New York School of Interior Design’s (NYSID) Green Design Awards this month as well as the Cooper-Hewitt’s “National Design Triennial: Why Design Now?” which will run from May 14, 2010, through Jan 9, 2011.

The first award, NYSID’s Green Design Awards, acknowledges individuals and businesses that have made outstanding contributions toward advancing the cause of sustainable design. According to President Christopher J. Cyphers, “The New York School of Interior Design recognizes the importance and urgency of preparing a green generation of designers and is fully committed to integrating sustainability into our curriculum, our practices as an institution and our civic and corporate partnerships. It is clear, by their actions and deeds, that our Green Design Award honorees share our vision and our goals, and we are thrilled to recognize their achievements.”

Being chosen for the Triennial at Cooper-Hewitt means that IceStone will be on exhibit for eight months as museum-goers explore the work of designers addressing human and environmental problems across many fields of design from architecture and product design, graphics, new media and landscape design. Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution is the only museum in the nation devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. The Museum presents compelling perspectives on the impact of design on daily life through active educational and curatorial programming. Being chosen for “Why Design Now?” reinforces that sustainable material like IceStone can be high design. And global for the first time, the Triennial’s reach will reflect the connectedness of design practices and the need for international cooperation to solve the world’s problems. IceStone will be featured in the ‘materials’ portion, emphasizing the need to reduce energy and fossil fuels in manufacturing and incorporate post consumer content
